Join Our Family for Dinner

Skappo

A taste of Umbria, in New Haven! Since 2004, our family has been serving traditional Umbrian food served along with Italian wines, café and house made Italian specialty deserts and pastries.

We use only the best seasonal produce to create a fabulous menu of Italian favorites. Instead of using greenhouse-grown or internationally-shipped produce that is lacking in flavor and appeal, we shift our menu every season.

Delicate baby beets as the first of the harvest, vine ripened tomatoes bursting with flavor in the middle of summer and the freshest winter squash tempts your palate at every bite. Locally-grown herbs provide a pleasantly flavorful mouthful, while locally-produced cheeses and fine wines round out your traditional Italian favorites.

Our Story

Family shot

Many, many years ago in a town called Assisi, lived a man named Francis. He devoted his life to God and to caring for his neighbor. In the closing days of his life, Francis (whom we know to be Saint Francis) reflected on the beauties of our shared life with Mother Nature. He conveyed his sentiments in the way he knew best - by writing a poem in his language, Italian, becoming the first person to write in the vernacular instead of Latin. Francis wrote of a splendor no man or woman can escape Nullu homo vivente po skappare.

Skappare, as it is written in today's Italian, is a word that originated in Assissi and used by one man to convey his love for Earth's majesties and his home. This is what Skappo brings to you: a love for the wonders of nature, along with a passion for our culture.

These sentiments have been brought to New Haven through the union of an inspired native of Assissi and a young artistic American student. It was a pristine spring day when Anna Gamdbacorta and Thomas Sincavage first exchanged glances across Assissi Piazza Minerva (June 3, 1973 at 3:20 PM to be exact!). The union has grown over the years of marriage and now includes children Michael, Yvette, and Marc, and daughters in law Louise and Minola, and grandchildren Massimo and Rocco.

Come, escape with us to celebrate together culture, friends and life! Enjoy the wines and foods of Italy, with old friends or new ones! Toast with us "perche la vita e' bella e la vogliamo vivere sempre piu!' because life is beautiful, and we want to live every moment!

Testimonials

Everything about Skappo is amazing. The atmosphere is romantic. The food is delicious and the staff makes you feel like family. The portions are pretty big. The antipasto is a good portion and a bowl of pasta can absolutely feed 2 people. 5 stars all the way! Go. Enough said. Phenomenal. highly recommend.

The food is fresh and really good. Simple dishes, but full of taste. This is a family run restaurant where family members cook, serve, chat with you and perform. Yes, perform. As tables move from main courses to delicious, in house made desserts, one of the family members comes out of the kitchen with a guitar and starts singing.

Collins Duhn

Overall, Skappo is incredibly charming, and does not try too hard to be "authentically Italian" to attract its patrons. Skappo is merely a place where the owners and their family create their sense of home and invite you to join in over dinner. I have to add that the matriarch of the restaurant Anna is the best! She was incredibly warm, so funny, and made us feel like we were part of the family while dining. I would come here again just to say "hello!"
